The New Martial Arts World of MMA Training

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has taken the world by storm. Thanks to the rise in popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, more and more people are now interested in MMA training. However, questions arise among fitness minded people regarding whether or not this type of training is for them. Is it not really tough training? Well, if you want to compete and win a title, yes you will have a very long and hard road ahead of you. If you are interested in MMA training for self-defense, fitness, and fun, you can still take part in the program without overly taxing yourself physically. But, what do these gyms teach?

The Three Areas of MMA Training

Mixed Martial Arts training is not a single art as much as it is a collective. Hence, it is “mixed” martial arts. Within the context of the training there are three areas which are covered:

  • Standup
  • Clinch
  • Ground

Standup refers to the striking (boxing/kickboxing) component. It can also refer to shooting takedowns from standing at at far range. Clinch is closer quarters standing wrestling involving tie-ups and controlling the upper body. The clinch can be a rather comprehensive area of fighting which can entail a great many techniques. All striking techniques including the knees and elbows are used in clinch fighting. Also, all grappling throws, takedowns, and standing locks can be employed in this area of MMA training as well. The ground game is exactly that. This is when the game goes to the ground then you will need to rely on your grappling skill in order to succeed.

The Sum of the Whole

While MMA is a collective of arts, you cannot just offer MMA training that is just a mix of random techniques and training methods. Rather, you will need to study the individual arts separately. The purpose for this is to learn the basics of the various different arts so that you can then blend them together effectively.

The most common arts which are part of the MMA training mix would be boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and amateur wrestling. These are not the exclusive arts that you can add to the mix. Judo, for example, is another art which many integrate. Others have even mixed in forms of traditional karate. Regardless of what MMA gym you join, you will find the aforementioned arts to be the core arts needed for developing a MMA fighter.

Boxing is probably the most important art for crafting a good standup game. Thai boxing adds kicks, knees and elbows, striking style clinch work, Greco-Roman offers the prime clinch body controls which can certainly provide the path to controlling an opponent in close quarters. Wrestling helps you learn takedowns and defend against them. BJJ is the art that provides all the submissions needed to win on the ground and many escape and reversal techniques to mount an effective defense.

Effective Training Methods

The different arts will all have their own training methods. The striking arts will employ a mix of equipment training such as hitting focus mitts, Thai pads, heavy bags, double end bags, and the like. Various partner drills can be employed with focus mitts and MMA or boxing gloves.

Clinch work is often trained by way of pummeling which is sparring for position. This entails controlling the arms and upper torso. Throws and takedowns can be worked from the clinch position.

The detail all the training methods of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu would be very difficult to do succinctly. Sweeps, submissions, escapes, defense against strikes, and guard work are all stressed in the progression of this art.

At some point, you will need to put the all the different arts together into one class. Is this difficult? Honestly, you can train at your own pace and this opens the door for you being able to properly weave all the arts together.

This same assessment needs to be applied to the discussion of sparring. You need not be to worry about the sparring being too difficult if you go slow and light and work on your technique. Sparring hard is counterproductive which is why most MMA training gyms do not put emphasis on hard sparring unless you are getting ready to fight.

MMA or mixed martial arts wasn’t without its fair share of criticism when it was first introduced. The fighters that are involved with the sport can participate in televised matches that can be graphic. Parents wouldn’t want to show footage of two people literally beating each other up until one cannot fight any longer. When it comes to MMA training, the instructors have to be strict as there are systematic approaches to teaching kids the necessary skills. If you think karate is strict, MMA training takes it up a notch because so many areas need to be focused. Mixed martial arts is literally a mixture of disciplines including karate, taekwondo, boxing and other combat sports that may involve striking and grappling.

With kids exposed to MMA training, they will have more self-control and become more obedient. The best thing about learning discipline is the fact that it can never be unlearned. The competitive nature of mixed martial arts will really encourage kids to focus on improving.

Develops Self-Confidence

Once kids have the drive in improving, self-confidence is developed automatically. It is always a good feeling for a young individual to be good at something that isn’t really a common skill. While there are certainly a lot of people that know how to physically defend themselves, a greater number really have no idea. This self-confidence and self-discipline can be carried over to other things outside of mixed martial arts like sports and other hobbies.

Training for a single combat sport actually has these benefits for kids. MMA training is simply more effective and efficient since you do not have to enroll your child to multiple programs.
